Cape Town joins Blouberg in celebrating a tenth anniversary

In January 2006, Chabad of the West Coast in Blouberg opened the doors of the Sinai Academy Jewish International School, welcoming three young students who were joining the fledgling school on day one. On 14 December 2016 the Portside Tower opened the elegant doors to its soaring glass atrium to welcoming close to 200 guests paying tribute to the Tenth Anniversary of the Sinai Academy and the hundreds of children who have passed through its doors over the last ten years. Following a delicious Merle Rubin hors d’oeuvres and Belvedere cocktail reception overlooking the Cape Town foreshore, the formal proceedings of the night opened in the Ballroom at the top floor of Portside. Cape Town’s highest venue, with its floor to ceiling windows, provided a breath-taking 180 degree backdrop view of the Foreshore, Harbour, Robben Island and Table Mountain. Barry Hilton’s non-stop humour was the perfect setting for the night, opened by Co-Chairs Brian and Lee-Anne Singer, prayers for Israel and South Africa by Rabbi Mendel Popack and Rabbi Yossy Goldman, and closing with the rousing melodies of Cape Town’s very own Choni G. “Celebration Sinai” as the event was billed, highlighted the theme of ‘No Jew Left Behind’ reflecting the Chabad approach of reaching out to every Jew, wherever and whomever they may be, with the warmth and wisdom of our faith and heritage, as demonstrated in this community by Rabbi Asher and Zeesy Deren, directors of Chabad of the West Coast.
