2011 August

9 August is a public holiday unique to South Africa, celebrating the strength and struggles of women in this country. The day marks a national women’s march against pass laws in 1956, and has come to remind us of this event and so much more. This is why we decided to focus on women in this month’s art and culture section of the Chronicle.

We interview famed South African photographer Jodi Bieber about her recent award-winning photograph, and speak to author Joanne Jowell about her latest book. Both provide fascinating perspectives on the roles and aspirations of women in today’s world. On a different note, Shaliach Yossi Eshed writes a farewell column in this month’s Chronicle as his three-year shlichut in Cape Town comes to an end. As an Israeli who has been immersed in the community, his thoughts are eloquent and insightful. We thank him for his contributions to the Cape Town community, and bid him and his family “le’hitraot!”

In addition, the first national Siniai Indaba was a resounding success in Cape Town and across the country, as it brought community members, international speakers and Torah teachings together. Read more about the conference on pages 1, 14 and 15.

Finally, the Chronicle is in urgent need of voluntary subscriptions from the community. We are once again facing financial challenges, and to ‘make ends meet’, we need at least 33% of voluntary subscriptions to be paid. We are already past the middle of the year, and have only received 23% of voluntary subscriptions to date! Please assist us by contributing your R250 for 2011, thereby maintaining this essential aspect of the Cape Town Jewish community. Please see the cover of the Chronicle for payment options. Thank you for your support!
