August edition of Inside and Out

Much has been happening at the Cape Board in the past weeks and our Conference ‘State of Mind; State of Nation’ will place on Sunday 6 August.

This month, we strengthened our ties with refugee communities living in South Africa, during an immensely difficult time with adverse legislation and national policy threatening to undermine their fundamental rights. On an ongoing basis, we have been moved by the stories our new allies share with us. Our deputy director, Gwynne Robins explains these regulations further in a special piece ‘Do not ill-treat a stranger, for you were strangers in Egypt’, while our advocacy and campaign coordinator, Philadelphia Makwakwa recounts the work we have been doing with the Congolese Civil Society, the Scalabrini Centre and others.

At the same time, we have been working tirelessly to respond to the needs of those most desperately in need of support following storms in the Cape and Fires in Knysna and the Garden Route. Our head of communications Liza-Jane Saban highlights this response in her article, Jewish Community raises R240 000 for victims of #CapeStorm and #KnysnaFire.

We look forward to taking conversations around these projects and so many others further at our conference where we will be unpacking secret ballots, junk status, #FeesMustFall, Pravin, Julius, the status of our universities, our politics and more.
We invite you to join thought-leaders in dialogue as we navigate our way through today’s challenges in South Africa as they affect our community.
