Cape Town’s first LEGO store opens in Canal Walk

Cape Town’s first LEGO Certified Store opened in Century City’s Canal Walk Shopping Centre on 28 September.

Some of our younger community members were at the special pre-opening day event, and the CJC interviewed them:

Jake Kaimowitz (8)

What was the first thing you wanted to see when you came to the LEGO store opening today? I wanted to see my LEGO set that I built — the giant dinosaur

How did you get involved with building a LEGO set for the shop front? My dad’s friend Robert [Greenstein, co-founder of the Great Yellow Brick Company and South African license-holders of the LEGO Certified Store concept] is the owner of the LEGO store and he asked my dad if I would be interested and I was.

Which set was it? The giant Jurassic Park dinosaur.

Was it a challenge to build? Yes, a lot! but my friends Levi and Raphael, my cousins Eli and Maya and my dad helped me.

Are you a LEGO set builder, or a LEGO free-style builder, or a bit of both? A bit of both. 50% LEGO sets and 50% freestyle.

If you were a minifigure what would you look like and what would your accessory be? My accessory would be a sniper rifle and I would look like a secret agent

Aaron Lipschitz (almost 5)

What was the first thing you wanted to see in the store? The latest LEGO ranges

What kind of LEGO builder are you? Definitely a set builder

If you were a minifigure what would you look like and what would your accessory be? A superhero with a cape!

Danyel Smith (7)

What was the first thing you wanted to see in the store? I wanted to see all the different types of LEGO they had. I wanted to see all the different builds I hadn’t seen before. I didn’t know what parts there would be to build the men.

Are you a LEGO set builder, or a LEGO free-style builder, or a bit of both? Both.

If you were a minifigure what would you look like and what would your accessory be? I would be a cool alien who is green, he has antennae with two eyes, no ears, with a paint brush and paint palette.

Ruben Levin-Vorster (7)

What was the first thing you wanted to see in the store? The amazing rollercoaster!

Are you a LEGO set builder, or a LEGO free-style builder, or a bit of both? A bit of both. (Dad: he first builds a set and then keeps it for a few weeks and then all pieces become part of his free-play LEGO.)

If you were a minifigure what would you look like and what would your accessory be? Definitely Master Wu! Accessories: A cape and a Master Wu bamboo stick!

Juliana Krupp (4)

What was the first thing you wanted to see in the store?  Well, I wanted to see all the beautiful colours of LEGO cause my favourite is the Frozen LEGO and my baby sister loves the Duplo. There was a talking LEGO policeman, he was sooooo funny!

Are you a LEGO set builder, or a LEGO free-style builder, or a bit of both? My Daddy helps me with the sets, he’s very good at it and I can sometimes do it by myself but only the easy ones. Today, I made a beautiful princess tower and carriage that I got from the LEGO store.

If you were a minifigure what would you look like and what would your accessory be? She must have curly hair like mine and a beautiful rainbow unicorn dress with all the colours of the rainbow.

LEGO Certified Stores are designed by The LEGO Group and are found in just 20 other countries.
