Celebrate your religious heritage with the Cape Town Interfaith Initiative Bus Tour

Few people have ever entered a house of worship belonging to a faith different from their own. 

On 25 September in celebration of Heritage Day, the Cape Town Interfaith Initiative takes a bus load of 60 travellers to explore different places of worship, sacred spaces and shrines. If religious and cultural heritage interest you, this tour should not be missed! 
 
The bus leaves from the Rondebosch Library, where secure parking has been arranged, and will provide participants with the opportunity to visit places of different faiths and encounter shrines such as the Constantia Kramat, where one of the three people that first brought Islam to South Africa Sheik Abdurachman, is buried. He was exiled to Constantia by the Dutch from Sumatra (Indonesia) in 1661. 
 
The tour also includes visits to the St Michael’s Catholic Church, a parish established in 1853, the Buddhist Centre Eco Village Observatory, and the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Rondebosch East where a delicious vegetarian lunch will be provided.  The last stop will be the Ananda Kutir Ashram which practises and teaches Integral Yoga as taught by H.H. Swami Sivananda, founder of the Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, India. 
 
Gwynne Robins, Deputy Director of the Cape SAJBD explains “So much prejudice is the result of ignorance and, in a world witnessing an upsurge of racist incitement and religious intolerance and xenophobia, as seen recently in Charlottesville, we need to work to promote interreligious and intercultural harmony. This tour will help break down that ignorance and introduce you to the traditions of our fellow South Africans .”
 
The tour promotes interfaith understanding, dialogue and learning, and is a fundraising event for the Cape Town Interfaith Initiative. Borne out of the 1999 Parliament of World Religions, the Cape Town Interfaith Initiative was established in 2000 and has been successful in bringing the interfaith agenda into the mainstream of religious and political consciousness.
