2009 December

We have made this our 25th anniversary special issue, and apart from the 60 pages, a particularly attractive 8-page wrapper has been compiled.

This issue itself is our most colourful yet, with advertisers and organisations enthusiastically ‘coming to the party’.

As ever, we try to place the most significant stories on page 1, usually with follow-ups within the paper. So that is a good place to begin the ‘long read’.

Summer, we are happy to note, has arrived at last, and it’s the wedding season down here in Cape Town. To date – and we do realise that for many, specially overseas readers, the bridal pages are the first port of call – this area has been relatively quiet. But there should be much to satisfy in the next few months.

In more serious vein, there are four specific recommended reads, of broad Jewish interest, by Hagai Segal, Ronnie Gotkin, Mickey Glass and young Daniel Mackintosh. The latter three are from ‘papers’ they presented at the conference of the Board of Deputies Cape Council at the end of October. The conference, showing many of its speakers, is also covered here in concise and readable format.

Together with Jews here in South Africa, in Israel and the world over we were shocked and deeply saddened – as we remain today – at the untimely passing of Mendel Kaplan, philanthropist, visionary and man of action, who followed his ideas and ideals passionately to the great benefit of so very many here and beyond. Mendel died after this paper had gone to press and we have paid tribute to him in a special page that has been inserted in our posted edition, and which is included here.

And finally, a hint of Herzlia’s valedictory and awards evenings is provided on page one, with the picture of matriculant Benjamin Katz proudly holding the brand new Cape Jewish Chronicle’ 25th Anniversary cup for journalism. The talent and intellect of the High and Middle School students, as well as their commitment in service to their own and the broader community, can be assessed from the awards presented.

Free at last, many are off to the various youth camps, and since this is holiday time for most of us, you are advised to take your time reading this December/January issue, as we will not be back till February!
