2012 March

Since they first settled in South Africa, Jews living in the country have continually asked the question “should we stay or should we go?”

While people have answered this by taking different paths or putting down roots, there are a myriad of reactions in between, and no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer.

We see this in the presence and history of Jews living in Africa, who certainly settled but also wandered. In an attempt to record that past and present, international photographer Jono David will soon visit the continent to create the biggest photographic collection of ‘Jewish Africa.’ See page 25 to read about this exciting undertaking.

Juxtaposed with this is a book pf photographs portraying Cape Town and its people; where local photographer Mia Feinstein got to know the Mother City ‘up close and personal.’ It is images and stories like these that remind us of the strength of home, setting down roots, and thriving in the place that we belong.

Indeed, on page 4 you can read about one ex-South African who decided to return to the country. In her column, Daniela Peiser explains why she has chosen to live in Cape Town, and offers her advice on how other young people would also choose to stay.

At the same time, the Chronicle has begun a new series called ‘Where are they now?’, tracking the stories and success of those who have settled overseas. We hope that through this series the community will have an opportunity to re-connect with expats, while continually grappling with South African Jewish identity. If you, a family member or friend would like to take part in this series, please contact the Chronicle office.

Wherever we are in the world, it is important to acknowledge where we have come from and where we are going. The Cape Jewish Chronicle will always be a space to reflect this and be a forum to engage with the community, whether you live in Cape Town or beyond.
