Indeed, these High Holy Days are a time to look at things differently, to push ourselves to be the best that we can be, and to acknowledge our more difficult attributes. Going ‘off the beaten track,’ both literally and figuratively, is the therefore the theme of our October issue. We urge you to explore new places and meet new people, to expand your horizons and enrich your understanding of yourself and the world around us.
Wayne Sussman gets this off to a great start by describing his far-flung adventures on page 4. His descriptions of South African’s tiny towns and hidden treasures will surely inspire you to go on your own trip to discover new and exciting places around you, whether you are in South Africa or abroad. In addition, our article on artists’ village Ein Hod in Israel (page 10) demonstrates that there are as many exciting, new, different and unconventional places to visit in Israel.
Meanwhile, members of our community are venturing to expand their own horizons, both literally and figuratively. The Levitas sisters from Cape Town recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Israeli NGO Save a Child’s Heart; and the over 500 delegates who attended the successful Limmud conference explored new ideas and interacted with new people. Indeed, as we begin 5772, we hope this issue will inspire you to follow in their footsteps and take the road less travelled.
