SAZF Cape Council Conference

‘Zionism in South Africa’ today panel discussion with Michael Snape, Hayley Galgut, Alan Fischer and Rabbi Greg Alexander.

Towards the end of October the SA Zionist Federation (Cape Council) welcomed a full house for their thought-provoking biennial Conference, the theme of which was ‘Zionism Today: Facing Diversity’.

Around 400 people attended the Gala Opening on the Saturday evening, 23 October, where they were treated to a ‘no nonsense’ talk by Caroline Glick, deputy managing editor of the Jerusalem Post, on the topic: ‘The manipulation of International Law in the service of Israel’s foes’.

This notion of ‘lawfare’ is a very real threat and means of attack Israel is facing today. Ms Glick’s profound experience and research in this area served to create a most informative and enlightening evening for all.

The Conference plenary sessions on the Sunday offered four panel discussions, each bringing fresh ideas and plenty of food for thought. These discussions centred around the topics: ‘Voice from our Youth’, ‘South African Zionism Today’, ‘Anti Israel – Anti Zionism = Anti Semitism’ and ‘Media: Distorted Truth’.

A week prior to the Conference, our youth held their own conference in which the different movements discussed the role of the youth today in relation to Israel and Zionism. The thoughts and insights they shared during the plenary session impacted on many and was a definite highlight.

In each panel discussion the deliberations were excellently presented and created a wonderful opportunity for engagement and dialogue around relevant issues.
