Women from around the world unite in Sydney for convention

The South African delegates: Daphne Miller, Peta Feldman, Mary Ndaba-Boardman (ex SA magistrate now living in Melbourne), Leora Berger, Myra Goldenbaum National President UJW SA and Lynne Raphaely, an ICJW Vice President, at the Gala Opening.

The UJW South African delegates were among the female Jewish leaders from 18 countries attending the International Council of Jewish Women’s inspiring three-day quadrennial convention in Sydney in May.

The theme of the convention was Evolving Beyond Tradition — The Impact of Women’s Perspectives and Developing Roles. Leaders of the Jewish community also participated in the event. Topics of global concern were discussed from women’s standpoints and were stimulating and inspirational. A fascinating session of intercultural dialogue brought together women from all communities worldwide.

The convention delegates enjoyed at tour of the Great Synagogue and a talk on Jewish Sydney by Michael Gold. The opening dinner was held at the Royal Motor Yacht Club and the gala changeover dinner at the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. They also enjoyed a Captain Cook dinner cruise and were in awe of the Sydney ‘Vivid’ lighting spectacular. The convention organiser and ICJW President for the past four years, Robyn Lenn OAM, formally handed over leadership of the International Council of Jewish Women to Penelope Conway from the UK, who will lead the organisation for the next four years.

Five SA UJW members were appointed onto the ICJW Executive Committee. These are Myra Goldenbaum as head of the Affiliate, Lynne Raphaely as ICJW Vice President, Daphne Miller, Chairman of the African Region, Linda Nathan, Vice Chairman Programmes, Policies, Resolutions and Karen Kallmann, Vice Chairman African Region.
