2009 February

February 2009 Cape Jewish Chronicle PDFOur entry into our 25th year has not been such a happy one, affected as we all are by events in Israel and Gaza, whose troublesome turmoil continues without sign of resolution in view.

This issue features much on the subject, with our 4-page feature covering the community response by way of a prayer service and show of solidarity, and Hagai Segal’s pinpoint perspective on the situation and aftermath.

Surprisingly, while there is so much in the general press in letters, both for and against, we have received none, other than one which came in too late for inclusion. Possibly because it would be ‘preaching to the converted’?

Another current and ongoing downer is the financial trauma besetting the world, whose reverberations throughout will probably also affect our publication – but hopefully not too badly – in terms of material coming in. But … it is our 25th anniversary year and we are optimistic that we can yet make it special.

For that reason, we have a very special full page, colour invitation on page 30, in the midst of the bridal pages, which really beckons perusal, as we are particularly proud of it and hope to get a good response via rsvp’s.

Besides that – and the front page stories and few items highlighted as well as Geoff Cohen’s well-focused ‘20-20 vision’ on education for this century on page 23 – there should be something for everyone in this 2009 ‘starter’. Do enjoy the read.
