Who (or what?) is Shwekey?
Yes it’s true! International Jewish music superstar Yaakov Shwekey is making his first ever appearance in Cape Town on Thursday 16 August, and the tickets are rapidly selling out at Computicket. The Cape Town International Convention Centre will be playing host to this remarkable individual and will please G-d draw 1500 Capetonians to one of the largest events our community has ever seen. Shwekey’s versatile rhythms combine his father’s rich Egyptian/Syrian Sephardi heritage; his mother’s traditional Ashkenazi background and his own American upbringing into an eclectic mix of melodies that delight the senses of his thousands of fans around the world. His Cape Town appearance will be conducted by his renowned producer Yochi Briskman, who is bringing his own six-piece band all the way from Israel; and the highly talented visual artist Aviyad. Together they will create a night of Jewish entertainment, spirit and sensation — the likes of which Cape Town has never seen before. At his appearance last year in Joburg, the 1800 seat Teatro at Monte Casino was sold out — two nights in a row! Some fifty Capetonians flew up to join the Shwekey experience. Gary Nathan, past Chairman of Herzlia Schools, explains why the whole Nathan tribe flew to Joburg for the performance: “Our children have grown up with Shwekey’s music. It’s part of their education that they have Jewish music and culture as a part of their heritage. When I’m overseas in the States or Israel, I try to find out if there’s a Shwekey performance…” But this year it’s coming to you — and 1,499 lucky others!
Everyone can attend
The Shwekey in Cape Town experience is one that will cater to every level and segment of the community, with tickets starting at R180 to ensure that every man, woman and child can be there. There will be specially-designated sponsored seats for those who absolutely cannot afford the tickets, but for a world- class event of this level, the entry price is far below the market value and creates an opportunity for everyone to participate. Chabad West Coast will host a ‘Night at the City’ cocktail reception before the concert with Premier Helen Zille, Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson, and other Jewish community dignitaries. This will allow participants to enjoy excellent seats, pre- concert drinks, and a chance to meet the star himself after the concert — all while supporting the Sinai Academy and the shul of Blouberg — West Coast. For the top donors, a special Saturday night exclusive kumzitz (gathering) with Yaakov Shwekey will round off a weekend that is truly a once in a life-time experience
