Israel at home – keeping us connected to Israel

Galya Tregenza Hall Media Liaison, SAZF Cape Council

The SAZF’s Israel at Home campaign has ensured a diverse and entertaining calendar of events to keep us all connected to Israel during this challenging time.

Over the last few months we have enjoyed laughs with Israeli comedian Benji Levitt and had some great baking and cooking demonstrations that proved to be fun for the whole family. Award winning journalist, Zivka Klein, gave a helpful talk about how other Jewish communities had been coping with the virus. Israeli screenwriter, Galit Roichman, presented a fascinating webinar all about exploring Israeli society through TV drama. Israeli politics has of course been very topical and both Rabbi Dov Lipman and top Israeli journalist Amit Segal shared some interesting insights into the current state of affairs.

Around Jerusalem Day, Rabbi Benny Lau spoke about Jerusalem: A Dream and a Reality and gave a most informative and interesting talk. Another highlight was our event with two South African Instagrammers, Alexi Portokallis and Miklas Manneke, who hosted a webinar on the art of Instagram and how to build a brand and following whilst showcasing their incredible images of Jerusalem. The visual journey and discussions around their images of Jerusalem were both stimulating and inspiring.
We were also delighted to host South African-Israeli foodie, Marius Salamon, who did a great job in tantalising our taste buds and explaining the origins of Israeli and Jewish cuisine.

Our South African premier of On the Hill, a documentary film about Jerusalem, was incredibly well received. The documentary featured work by young South African Obett Motaung who was selected to take part in a prestigious international film workshop in Jerusalem. Motaung was interviewed by SA actress, Sharon Spiegel Wagner on his adventures.

Our How well do you know Israel? Quiz was very well received and a fun-filled night of Israel trivia, hosted by Middle East correspondent Paula Slier, was enjoyed by all who participated.

Despite lockdown we have continued to come together virtually and enjoy various webinars and online events that have been successful in keeping us connected to amazing Israel!
