A recently released national survey found that while most South Africans think that rape and gender-based violence are serious issues, a concerning minority of 1 in 4 believe that rape can be justified in certain circumstances, and 1 in 3 South Africans believe that rape in war can be justified.
The Women’s Action Campaign South Africa (WACSA) commissioned this survey to explore reasons for the muted responses in South Africa to the sexual atrocities committed by Hamas militants in Israel on 7 October 2023.
These findings underscore the critical need for education, dialogue and accountability measures to protect and support everyone regardless of gender, race, religion or politics.
Join us for this important discussion about the weaponisation of rape and sexual violence, and why more needs to be done end the use of this brutal weapon.
