2010 December

This issue, coming out just at the time we celebrate Channukah, is the last of 2010 as well as for editor Irma Chait, who retires after 26 years.

There is a fair amount of coverage of all this in the paper, plus a good deal of advertising, plenty of colour and some fine articles and reports, just a taste of some being indicated below.

Web readers will unfortunately not be able to see the inserts that are posted out to ‘in hands’ readers, which we hope will include the annual unique and much sought after Chabad calendar, a report on this year’s Board of Deputies Cape Council Conference, a ‘hint’ of which is on the front page, and even a gift magnet with the Shabbat times for the year ahead.

The Channukah issue – as with the other major editions – normally carries a large percentage of advertising, which, welcome as it is, could outshine the content. But not so in this issue, where, in addition to an excellent spread of communal coverage there are really good features of more general, and ‘human’ interest, all making for a really good balance and enjoyable holiday season reading – a fitting finale to the year and for the editor.

While Irma bows out with a farewell editorial and her last WayICit – with a tweak of the ear in Carol Burnett style – we are very happy indeed to welcome her successor, Tali Barnett. Tali will be bringing her particular slant, style and expertise to our pages, beginning with the first issue of 2011 in February.

As she advises in her remarks on page one, “ … watch this space!”
