2012 April

Pesach is upon us, and we hope this issue of the Chronicle will bring you much food for thought (even if it’s matza-related!) and the spirit of celebration on this special chag.

Pesach is about many things: Bringing family together; re-telling such an important story of the Jewish people; celebrating and promoting freedom and dignity; and contemplating the importance of leadership.

All this is included in this issue of the Chronicle. Bringing family together means being part of a community, and these pages are filled to capacity with communal activities, organisations, events, outreach and interaction. From campaign launches to youth movements; from Zionism to activism, you will find it all, and more.

Our exclusive interviews with cartoonist Zapiro (pg. 38) looks at the journey of the Exodus and how it relates to our lives today, especially in the context of freedom, South Africa and Nelson Mandela’s own long walk to freedom. Read this exciting discussion, as well as our humourous chat with comedian Nik Rabinowitz, to look at Pesach from a new and refreshing angle!

In this issue we have taken inspiration from leaders such as Madiba, and most importantly Moses, and looked at leadership in the context of our lives today. Rael Kaimowitz’s fascinating discussion on what it means to be a leader offers important insights; and compels us to all contemplate our roles as leaders and community members, especially at Pesach time (pg. 4).

The recent Schusterman Foundation’s South African Young Jewish Innovators Gathering; our interviews with ‘14 under’ 40 young professionals working in the community; the Herzlia Student Council forum (pg. 1) and the many numerous faces of leadership that appear in this issue demonstrate that the Cape Town Jewish community has a dynamic and inspiring crop of present and future leaders. As we sit at our Seder tables, let us all aspire to the leadership of Moses and the lessons of Pesach. Chag Sameach!
