Remembering Cape Town Machalniks

Dear Editor,

I refer to your August edition, and to your article ‘1948 heroes re-create history’ — Machalniks as we are referred to. Your two photographs were interesting, but as an ex-Capetonian, it is a pity there is no Capetonian to be seen. Out of 800 South African Machalniks there were 100 Capetonians — no doubt there must still be some around who would appreciate spotting acquaintances of old. I have a list of a 100 Capetonians and also a photograph [see below] where 30 of us met in a reunion in 1950 at the home of then Israeli Ambassador Bavli at Green Point. I am originally from Durbanville before making Aliyah 50 years ago. Norman Spiro If readers would like to share their Machal stories and photographs, please email them to editor@ctjc.co.za
