The Cape Town Jewish community began 2014 with a running start, as this issue demonstrates!
The pages are filled with wonderful reports and exciting upcoming events; news and views; arts and culture; sport, advertisements, wedding pictures and more. There is certainly something for all to read and enjoy! We also showcase the excellent Herzlia matric results.
On a more sombre note, this issue of the Chronicle pays tribute to Nelson Mandela and Ariel Sharon. We look back on some of the SA Jewish community’s ‘Madiba moments’; and Ann Harris’ moving speech certainly captures the strong relationship between Mandela and Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris z”l. (see pages 22 – 23). We also feature an opinion piece on Mandela’s complex relationship with Zionism (page 4).
Photos of Ariel Sharon throughout his military career capture the role he played in Israeli history and his importance as a leader of our people (page 10); while the SAZF’s obituary to him looks back at key moments in his life and career.
