United Jewish Campaign Appoints First Female Trustee

Dorothy Sank with her husband Leonard.

On 14 November Dorothy Sank made Cape Town history by being the first woman appointed onto the Board of Trustees of the United Jewish Campaign.

On being accepted onto the Board, Dorothy comments, ‘I am honoured to be working alongside stalwarts of our community and am looking forward to being mentored by a committee who give so tirelessly to our community. It is also a privilege to be the first woman to join the Board’
When it comes to seeing more women in such positions in the community, Dorothy states, ‘I am hoping that many more talented women will rise to the challenge of making a difference by involving themselves and contributing to an organisation in the community that they feel affiliated to.’ She continues by quoting a fitting line by Golda Meir, ‘Whether women are better than men I cannot say — but I can say they are certainly no worse.”’

Dorothy credits her passion for community, and particularly for the Cape Town Jewish Community, to her parents, who instilled this in her: ‘The Board has an enormous responsibility to safeguard the Jewish Community and its organisations. It is on this very premise that I was privileged to have my parents and family role model the importance of community and looking after the most vulnerable. The way to inspire others around you is to become involved and be the change that you would like to see. I am hoping to learn, grow, add value and infuse a female spirit to a dedicated and esteemed committee.’
