Connecting with Rabbi Sergio and connecting with the world

Jeanne Livingstone and Diana Sochen with Rabbi Sergio Bergman

Many of our leaders and congregants enjoyed the opportunity to hear and meet with Rabbi Sergio Bergman.

Rabbi Sergio is president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ), and visited South Africa as the guest of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism for its biennial conference. Rav Sergio has a fascinating life story. As a child of Shoah survivors, he studied biochemistry and pharmacology at university and later got his smicha as a Rabbi. He became the first rabbi appointed as a government minister in Argentina, and is a close friend of his landsman Pope Francis.

While in Cape Town, he gave a series of divrei Torah over Shabbat and Shavuot, showing his deep spirituality and gift of translating complicated concepts into everyday words. He also experienced our unique annual cheesecake competition. We took the opportunity to connect Temple Israel with the global community via the first online Shavuot Across the World tikkun leil with people logging in from all over to hear our Cape Town speakers.

It was a wonderful way to be reminded that even though we might think we are tucked away at the foot of the African continent, we are part of a global Jewish network of over 1 million members and of course of global Jewry.
