BEREAVEMENT

Leslie Hurwitz passed away in Somerset West on Tuesday 21 June 2022 after a short struggle with cancer.

Born in Paarl in 1940, he was the son of Chaim and Leah, and was married to Elize in 1966 in Paarl Synagogue.

He was an accomplished sportsman, playing cricket for Western Province as well as rugby for the Paarl district first team. He was a pioneer of mixed-race sports and was the first white player in Paarl’s Young People’s cricket team in the early 1970s. In later years Les was a keen park runner, frequently leading in his category until taking ill in January 2022.

Throughout his life Les was an active member of the Jewish community, and an avid historian with a fascination for South African Jewish history and the small towns of the Karoo. The Jewish Record published a number of his pieces on the forgotten stories of early Jewish settlers to the Cape.

Les is survived by his wife Elize, and his children Ronelle, Brandon and Tamar, eight grandchildren, and his sister Bella.
