On September 22nd, in partnership with the German Consulate in Cape Town, The Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre proudly opened Seeing Auschwitz, an internationally acclaimed exhibition, to a capacity audience. This exceptional exhibition features a collection of 100 photographs, sketches, and testimonies from the German Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz.
Before the event’s official commencement, the distinguished guest speaker, Pawel Sawicki, Press Officer & Educator at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, provided an informative guided tour of the exhibition for our esteemed guests. The opening ceremony commenced with a warm welcome from Richard Freedman, Chairperson of CTHGC, who had served as the interim director for the past year. He officially passed the reins to the incoming director, Jakub Nowakowski, who then introduced the exhibition.
The German Consul General, Tanja Werheit, delivered a special address that added to the significance of the event. The event concluded with a panel discussion led by Jakub Nowakowski, featuring Paweł Sawicki and Orli Barnett, Education Director of CTHGC. This thought-provoking discussion explored the symbolism of Auschwitz throughout history, while also seeking to understand its contemporary relevance and role in addressing global challenges.
The panelists delved into the ongoing efforts of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial to preserve this site as a historical monument and how it can be harnessed to educate future generations about the dangers of hateful ideologies and the imperative of moral responsibility.
The exhibition is open at the CTHGC until 31 January 2024. We offer private and group tours – please book through admin@holocaust.org.za.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full public programme of lectures and screenings.
