Hadley Freeman, a well-known British-American Jewish journalist, wrote an autobiographical account of her own struggle with the eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, in the book, Good Girls: A Story and Study of Anorexia. She provides a very personal account of suffering from the disease between the ages of 14 and 17.
Reading the book was beneficial, since it helped me understand more about the condition. In essence, during her teenage years, the prospect of becoming an adult was an intimidating concept for her, and so she sought psychological and emotional solace through the focus on food and not eating.
What struck me about her story is the fact that she lost so many years of her schooling and of building relationships with friends and family members while she struggled with the condition. It is quite remarkable that she has since moved beyond, creating a good life – marrying and having children, and following a very successful career as a journalist and columnist. For me, that provides a message of hope for sufferers and for their families.
