Shalom from Cape Town! We invite you and your community to “Patterns of Identity,” our ceramics exhibition opening May 29th at 1895 Gallery.
My name is Jason Eisen, I’m a Jewish American entrepreneur based in Kenya working alongside my Kenyan partner Josemarie Nyagah, currently doing a ceramics residency in Cape Town with celebrated Ceramicist John Bauer. As part of the exhibition, I will showcase a series of porcelain yarmulkes and other objects that explore my Jewish identity, among other works. This identity is showcased by the name I’ve chosen for my studio, v’mordechai Ceramics, celebrating my great grandfather and using a portion of my Hebrew name, which I’ve never used.
Visitors will experience nerikome vessels with cross-sections reminiscent of the Cape’s geological formations, works fired in wood-burning kilns and abalone shells, alongside John Bauer’s tile mosaics, Clare Menck’s paintings, and Marcelino Manhula’s mosaics.
Please share this invitation with your community members. The exhibition creates a rich conversation about heritage and the universal experience of crafting identity across borders and traditions.
We’d be honored by your presence at our opening reception on May 29, 5-8pm. All five artists present. The exhibition continues through June 3rd.
