On a recent Friday night, we hosted our first Shabbat dinner for our welfare clients. It was a truly spectacular and deeply moving occasion, attended by approximately 65 guests who, for one night, experienced the beauty, warmth, and dignity of a shared Shabbat table. This initiative, the first of its kind under our Care Services banner is something I hope to continue on a quarterly basis. This inaugural dinner was personally sponsored by me, and I would be honoured to see it grow with broader community support in the future, perhaps the next one we will have at Spes Bona.
We did not know what to expect and the evening was transformed into an unforgettable evening of spiritual awakening and human connection. Choni G, who kindly joined us to lead the prayers, was so overwhelmed by the spirit in the room that he stayed on, sang songs, and uplifted everyone with his presence. It was spontaneous, soulful, and unforgettable.
Our clients arrived dressed beautifully, some of the gentlemen in jackets and ties, reflecting the pride and excitement they felt. The food was wonderful and the staff showed immense care and warmth, serving each guest with dignity and respect. The atmosphere was one of community, compassion, and celebration, and I will never forget the look in our clients’ eyes, shining with joy, appreciation, and a sense of belonging.
The impact of the evening was immediate and tangible. Several clients were so inspired they chose to attend synagogue the following morning – a powerful reminder of how important connection and inclusion truly are.
I would like to thank Hazel Levin and her team, Mandy Edison, Executive Director of Astra, Arthur Levin, Chairman of Astra, for all your assistance and for so graciously facilitating the use of the venue and ensuring every detail was taken care of. This would not have been possible without all your support and belief in the vision.
To everyone who helped make this evening possible, from staff to volunteers, from organisers to our musical guest – thank you. You reminded us all that kindness, when combined with community, has the power to restore dignity and lift the human spirit.
