A recently published book, Fly low and fly slow,tells the wartime story of Capetonian Harold Barnett. The book is a collaborative effort by Harold’s son, Peter, and Plettenberg Bay resident, Mike Kantey.
The book provides a short history of the SA Metal scrapyard in Salt River – the Barnett family’s business, which Harold headed up and which is today run by Peter’s cousins, Graham and Clifford Barnett. It tells the story of the handful of Jewish pilots who flew Kittyhawks and Spitfires against the Nazis in North Africa and Italy during World War II.
The book is currently available at Clarke’s Bookshop in Long Street, as well as PNAs in Cavendish Square, Plumstead, and Meadowridge. ●
