I recently read about the passing of Ruth Weiss, who fled Nazi Germany with her parents in the 1930s and settled in South Africa.
Here, she encountered discrimination as a Jewish person living among right-wing Whites, and was horrified by the impact of the apartheid system on people of colour. She commented, “In this white-dominated country, we had the right skin colour but the wrong religion.” Her experiences led her to become a life-long activist fighting for tolerance and for peace.
On the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, she said: “The hatred that continues to grow with every new death will only prolong the tragedy for both peoples.”
I have no doubt that we can all learn valuable life lessons from the late Ruth Weiss z’l. ●
