A rallying symbol for the return of the chatufim – hostages – still trapped in Gaza has been the yellow ribbon. Globally, it is linked to the safe return of hostages, prisoners of war, and troops abroad. In the US, it featured in famous songs, symbolised the release of Americans during the Iran hostage crisis, and the return of troops from the Gulf War. In Israel, it became a symbol of hope during Gilad Shalit’s time in Hamas captivity. May this be the last October we need to bear the yellow ribbon. ●
