War and Peace – a tapestry by Tanya Sternberg

Tanya Sternberg

Cape Town artist, Tanya Sternberg, has donated her spectacular piece of tapestry, War and Peace, to the SA Jewish Museum (SAJM) for its permanent collection of artworks.

An accomplished artist, Tanya has created a series of artworks for leading South African retailers, and has exhibited in galleries both locally and abroad.

Tanya explains that War and Peace “is a tribute to those lives lost on October 7th, as well as all those who have defended the Jewish people ensuring our existence today.”

In explaining the concept behind this artwork, Tanya says:

“Through the medium of wool, this artwork explores the ideas of faith, heritage, loss, strength and courage. These feelings are meshed together and interwoven via abstract shapes. They map the times we are living through as a nation, and the inner geography we as an individual or collective people experience.

Shapes and colours draw inspiration from the Jewish prayer shawl, the Tallis, an ancient yet modern-day attire that is used in prayer. Bullet casings dripping off the wool reflect the tragedy our nation has endured. The gold thread echoes the faith and courage that through the centuries has kept the Jewish people alive.

Despite loss and pain, this tapestry speaks of an ancient people clinging to hope and standing firm in their beliefs and existence.” ●

The artwork will be on display in the SA Jewish Museum during the month of October in commemoration of the second anniversary of October 7th.
