The Cemeteries Maintenance Board (CMB) and the Union of Orthodox Synagogues (UOS) are aware of the issue regarding the missing or stolen boundary fencing on the Thornton Drive side of both Pinelands No.1 and Pinelands No.2 Jewish Cemeteries. The CMB and the UOS have been working tirelessly over the past three years with The City of Cape Town and our community leadership in order to resolve this ongoing issue and replace the missing fencing with a more vandal-resistant Clearview fencing solution.
The CMB and The City of Cape Town have an MOA in place, in which it is clearly stated that The City is responsible for the erection and maintenance of ALL boundary fencing bordering our Jewish Cemeteries. We are engaging with The City on a weekly basis in order to resolve the ongoing issue in accordance with this MOA, as a matter of urgency. The UOS and CMB also regularly consult with CSO regarding security at our Pinelands Jewish Cemeteries. The CSO remains updated on the status of the fencing and have been involved in consultations with The City of Cape Town in this regard.
Work has begun on replacing the stolen fencing at our Pinelands Jewish Cemeteries. The City of Cape Town contractors will be working over the next two weeks to erect new fencing along both the Pinelands No.1 and Pinelands No.2 boundaries on Forest Drive.
This is a temporary measure until such time as The City is able to secure funding for a more robust and vandal-resistant ClearView fencing solution in July 2026.
