Cape Town artist and ceramicist, Yvette Polovin, spends a great deal of her time inspiring senior members of our community during her mosaic classes at the Cape Jewish Seniors Association (CJSA) in Sea Point.

An enthusiastic advocate for the organisation, Yvette explains: “CJSA promotes the interests and well-being of Jewish seniors in Cape Town, providing community centres, services and programmes to inform and engage with seniors and their families. The various programmes on offer also serve to promote social interaction among a wide range of people who make up the older age cohort of the community.”

Recently, under Yvette’s direction, a team of artists from the CJSA completed a beautiful mosaic, essentially a glass mural, which has been affixed to an outside wall at the CJSA centre, housed in a beautiful old Victorian house called Stonehaven in Albany Road, Sea Point.

“We have worked on a depiction of the CJSA logo,” Yvette explains. “It’s more than just a logo. It’s a labour of love. We started by gathering glass and ceramic tiles that matched our CJSA colours, then laid out the design on mesh so everyone could get involved. It was a joy to see our members take ownership of different sections, some carefully cutting pieces for the letters while others filled in the bold, coloured shapes. After the glue dried, we moved the mesh onto the wall for the final installation. Following several rounds of grouting and cleaning, the mural is finally sparkling and ready for everyone to enjoy.”

This was clearly a meaning-ful project for the mosaic artists to be involved in, and all have a great sense of pride in the final product.
