When I saw Candice Bernstein’s one-woman show, earthside, about a year ago, I was struck by how sad it was that, other than myself and the two other people in my audience group, there were probably no Jewish people there. Performed in Somerset West, the distance from Cape Town must have been the reason that more members of our Cape Town Jewish community weren’t there to enjoy a spectacular show that really speaks to one’s Jewishness.
Candice uses so many words – mostly in Yiddish – and multiple nuances of Jewish identity that the show truly spoke to my Jewish South African consciousness.
As such, I do hope that many of the readers of the Cape Jewish Chronicle will take the opportunity to enjoy this show now that it’s on closer to Cape Town. Candice has reprised the show for two nights at the end of July, and will be performing it at Theatre Arts in Observatory on Monday and Tuesday, 27 and 28 July.
earthside is a dark comedy that explores the raw, chaotic and unpredictable space between life and death. The show dives head-first into the bittersweet reality of grieving – Candice feels the intense grief of losing her beloved grandfather, Fred Levy – while also becoming a first-time mother. Candice’s experience reveals the collision of joy and sorrow in absurd ways. With humour as its guide, earthside is a personal journey filled with moments of levity, deep reflection and plenty of irreverence.
Candice comments that, “Among other themes, the show deals with my own journey into Judaism. With plenty of fun Jewish humour and heart, this show takes an unflinching look at what it means to live in the here and now, and how to make sense of the senseless.”
