A Morning to Remember The UJW 84th AGM

Thursday 11 May saw members of the UJW fill the Hellenic club to attend our 84th AGM.

Speaker Marlene Bethlehem, President of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, recounted the personal story of her family and events that had occurred during the holocaust. It was a story of connections, reconnections and hope which concluded with the words: “People have tried to put our light out and for a while it was dim, but now it shines brighter than ever”

Awards were handed out to UJW members for their dedicated and meritorious service to the organisation. These included three honorary life membership awards for Myra Goldenbaum, Ada Newman and Dr Hannah Reeve-Sanders. Leaza Cowan spoke about the various projects and achievements of the UJW over the past year. She presented Michelle Cohen, Chairman of the Kensington Crèche Committee, with the Pearl Mandelstam award for her outstanding dedication. Leaza thanked her committee and staff for their support and assistance over her term as chairman and said it had been five years of incredible growth for her. She thanked the loyal members, patrons and benefactors who are the backbone of the organisation. She then introduced Daphne Miller as the new chairman for 2017. Daphne paid tribute to Leaza and thanked her for all the hard work, energy and passion she had put into the UJW over the past five years.
