Our Sea Point home is undergoing a facelift.

This change has long been anticipated and we are eagerly looking forward to its completion so that our centre can once again be a warm and inviting place for everyone to meet. Special thanks to the Union of Jewish Women for allowing us to make use of their premises whilst the renovations are taking place.

Members have enjoyed sharing the various Chags with their families — many of whom have arrived for the High Holy Days from far afield to be together for this special time of the year. We have also enjoyed the hospitality of the various Shuls who hosted Sukkot parties and included our members whilst doing so. It is heartwarming to see how inclusive the Cape Town community is to our members
Mini Olympics
We are about to host our first ever Mini Olympics — 31 October should prove to be a great day with fun to be had by both the participants and spectators. We will be using the Van Riebeeck sports field in Highlands and we are planning a special event together with residents of Highlands House as well as other seniors centres who have been invited to participate. Community participation will be appreciated — so please pop in to support our seniors on the last day of October, the month dedicated to honouring Seniors.
Volunteers Brunch
As an organisation we could not function without the support and assistance of our wonderful volunteers. This year, a thank you morning is going to be hosted in Wynberg for the first time and Yvonne Reynolds, our social worker whose portfolio is Volunteers, has a special morning planned for all those who volunteer and provide support to CJSA.

Tips for Staying Young and Happy Always
Throw out nonessential numbers.
This includes age, weight, and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.
Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.
(Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)
Keep learning:
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain get idle. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’ And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s!
Enjoy the simple things
Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. If you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with him or her.
The tears happen: endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life, is our self.
LIVE while you are alive.
Surround yourself with what you love: Whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
Don’t take guilt trips.
Take a trip to the mall, even to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.
Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

Please note that the programme might change at short notice. All of our presenters are volunteers and give of their time when possible. Things do crop up, however, and sometimes we have to find replacements at very short notice.

Diana Sochen
Executive Director

It is with much sadness that we pay tribute to Irene Freeman, Chairman of CJSA (2015 – 2017) who passed away after a short, intense illness which she endured with stoicism.
Irene endured herself to all members with her commitment and positive spirit whenever she interacted with anyone. Her monthly exercise classes were always well attended and enjoyed.
She will be sorely missed by each one of us who spent time with her, whether on the committee or as a member with whom she interacted. We extend our sympathy to her husband Irving and her children.
