The course examines anti-Jewish ideas and tropes in South Africa from the late nineteenth century to the present.

An attempt is made to account for the ebb and flow of hostility within cultural and religious patterns, as well as changing political and economic frameworks. Continuities, discontinuities and contingencies are explored and a changing cast of haters, always influenced by ideas beyond South Africa, are discussed and analysed.
