120 not out for the Cape SAJBD

The Cape South African Jewish Board of Deputies (Cape SAJBD) recently celebrated its 120th anniversary with a memorable cocktail event, marking 120 years of dedicated service to the Jewish community in Cape Town. The gathering brought together community members, political leaders, and esteemed guests in a display of unity and reflection on the organisation’s impactful history. Executive Director Daniel Bloch led the evening as the master of ceremonies, guiding attendees through a programme rich in history, entertainment, and heartfelt remarks.

Opening the evening’s speeches, Cape SAJBD Chair Adrienne Jacobson highlighted the Board’s evolution from its founding mission to its continued advocacy today. MP Michael Bagraim (Former Chairperson of the Cape SAJBD), an influential voice in South African politics and a longtime advocate for the Jewish community, commended the Board’s resilience and leadership, whilst Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasised Cape Town’s commitment to being a safe, inclusive home for its Jewish citizens. Also present was SAJBD National Chair Professor Karen Milner who delivered congratulatory remarks. Adding a personal touch, an audio-visual presentation showcased video messages from past Chairs and friends of the Board, offering reflections on the challenges and triumphs that have shaped the organisation.

The evening’s entertainment showcased Hebrew songs by the Herzlia Vocal Ensemble, led by Cantor Ivor Joffe, and the stirring voices of the Mzansi Tenors, who seamlessly blended African, Hebrew, opera, and musical theatre classics. Acclaimed opera singer Aviva Pelham joined the Mzansi Tenors, who delivered a memorable performance, highlighting a beautiful mix of tradition, history, and vibrant community spirit. Together, they underscored the Cape SAJBD’s enduring legacy. With strong roots and a steadfast dedication to its mission, the Cape SAJBD continues to represent, protect, and unify Cape Town’s Jewish community.

Lester Hoffman, Treasurer of the Cape SAJBD, Chairman of the CSO Cape Town, and Chair of the Cape Jewish Chronicle, was awarded the Eric Samson and Mendel Kaplan Award for Service to the Community at the 120th anniversary National SAJBD Gala dinner held in Johannesburg in November. This prestigious award exemplifies Lester’s decades of outstanding service to the Jewish community both in Cape Town as well as South Africa as a whole.
