Bridging generations in Cape Town’s Jewish community
Preserving the voices of Holocaust survivors is crucial, but we also need to continue preserving the memories and experiences of their descendants — the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations.
Recognising the need to continue their legacies through these later generations, the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre in co-operation with Capetonians Leora Hessen and Stacy Closenberg, both of whose grandmothers were Holocaust survivors from the island of Rhodos, introduced the idea of 3GCT (based on a similar project in New York).
The goal of the project is to extend preservation efforts to include the experiences of 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Holocaust survivors from Cape Town — the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of survivors.
This unique project will encourage individuals to explore their roots and identity, and to experience how perpetuating their families’ stories can benefit the broader community and future generations.
