Former Capetonian, Pinchas Gutter, who emigrated to Canada many years ago, remains a well-known figure in our community. Demonstrating his commitment to educating about the Holocaust, Pinchas has given a great deal of his time to many causes. In addition to his work with the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, both during the period he lived here and following his move to Canada, Pinchas has had a positive impact on the Cape Jewish Seniors Association, previously serving as the Chair of the organisation and carrying the honour of being a life member.
His efforts have not gone unnoticed: among many other examples of the recognition of his volunteer work is the recent announcement that he has been named as a Member of the Order of Canada, his adopted country. This is a national order of great significance, and is acknowledged as the centrepiece of Canada’s honour system. In fact, the wording of the motto of the Order – ‘desiderantes meliorem patriam’ (‘They desire a better country’) – reflects what has driven Pinchas to do the work that he has taken on over many years.
Pinchas explains that, “The award reflects my work as a Holocaust educator, and acknowledges this work as promoting dialogue on human rights, which is geared to improve society and the world at large.”
Pinchas uses his own Holocaust experience to educate people about the Holocaust. His story is told in a documentary film, Testimony, which is part of the permanent exhibition at the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre.
