Chabad on Campus Stellies
Thanks to the generous support of several committed friends and parents of Stellies Students, Chabad on Campus secured a one-year lease on a house near many of the University Rez’s. The Duthies moved into the new Chabad House at the beginning of March. It is finally official that Jewish students now have a permanent address, a Jewish Home away from Home at Chabad on Campus in Stellenbosch. Do you know any Jewish students who need a place for Pesach Seder? Be in touch with Rabbi Chananya – call 0625636324.

UCT Welcome Fest
New and returning Jewish students were warmly welcomed at the UCT welcome festival on the rugby field, with freshly baked challah, a hug, and an opportunity to meet and greet other Jewish students. Our welcome fest tent, to many is that familiar feeling of ‘home’ in a new and daunting environment.

#LetMyPeopleKnow
Our Theme for this year is #LetMyPeopleKnow. Now more than ever, we are recommitting ourselves to empowering our students through Jewish Education at the highest levels. Towards that end, we’ve launched two serious undertakings. The first: Introducing The Katz Family Jewish Lending Library at Chabad on Campus, funded by Lance and Kim Katz who, when asked for their inspiration behind this visionary gift, responded: “We Jews are the people of the book. Reading and learning is what has distinguished us and sustained us as a great nation for millenia.” Thank you Katz Family for your tremendous leadership!
The second initiative, Introducing: JewishU, (Jewish University) a full suite in-house academy with bite-size courses for busy students. Students enroll, choose from a menu of courses, complete classes and collect redeemable credits. Our first course was quickly filled up with 25 students around the table. We’re looking into a more spacious venue! please contact Rabbi Nissen for dedication opportunities via rabbi@jewct.com

CHABaking a difference
Our social bake nights spread across the years and several chagim where, aside from having fun and learning about the upcoming chag, we also raise awareness and funds for local Jewish causes. This Purim’s hamantasch bake, students brought non-perishable food items for the JCS Foodbank.

Jewish prIDe
on display
It is heartening to see so many Jewish students choosing to proudly display their mezuzot on their dorm room doors. Between Cape Town and Stellenbosch, we could fill more than four full pages of the Chronicle with pictures of these alone. Thanks to every single donor of the Chabad on Campus Mezuzah Bank who’ve made it possible for any student to fulfil this special mitzvah without obstacle.

Purim
We, thank God, had an amazing Purim this year: we collab’d with Chabad Cape Town for AN UNFORGETTABLE party on Cameraland’s rooftop – thanks to Gary and Amira Shap! With megillah reading, music and dancing by DJ Jayson Smith and even a stand up routine by Nik RABINOWITZ aka Chaya mushka. We also held a megillah reading at UCT for students, faculty and parents!
