Capetonians have one more chance to see the highly successful one-woman show, earthside, before it moves to Johannesburg for the Red Hill Arts Festival
The show, which enjoyed a sold-out run and a return season at Theatre Arts in Observatory earlier this year, will be on at the Drama Factory in Somerset West in late May and again on 7 and 8 June.
Written and performed byCape Town’s Candice Bernstein (known previously for her work in Gruesome Playground Injuries andEve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues), earthsideis an auto-biographical dark comedy that explores the raw, chaotic and unpredictable space between life and death. The show dives head-first into the bittersweet reality of grieving while also becoming a first-time mother: where joy and sorrow collide in the most absurd ways. With humour as its guide, earthside takes an unflinching look at the complexity of existing in the in-between. It’s a personal journey filled with moments of levity, deep reflection and plenty of irreverence.
Candice comments that, “Among other themes, the show deals with my own journey into Judaism. With plenty of fun Jewish humour and heart, this show takes an unflinching look at what it means to live in the here and now, and how to make sense of the senseless.” ●
Among the family members Candice remembers in her show is her grandfather, Fred Levy, who was well-known among Cape Town’s Jewish community. Candice enjoyed a particularly close relationship with her grandfather, and mourns his passing just over a year ago.
Fred was born in Berlin in 1935. Finding out that he was to be arrested by the Gestapo, Fred’s father, Fritz, fled to Czechoslovakia. Fred and his mother, Johanna, left Germany on the pretext of holidaying in Italy, but the plan was in fact for them to meet up with Fritz again. From Italy, the family boarded an Italian cruise ship, the Duilio, bound for Cape Town. Fred arrived here at the age of 11 months and remained in Cape Town for close to 90 years.
