VIV ANSTEY, Director: Eliot Osrin Leadership Institute
I toyed with my decision to attend the massive JPro25 gathering, an international conference for Jewish community professionals.
For certain it would be leadership-focused conferencing, networking, learning and innovation – on steroids. For certain it would take me out of my comfort zone, as I navigated long-haul travel and 1 295 strangers. But I have been down this road before and know I am at my optimum when I confront exposure bordering on saturation, and the uncertainty of not knowing what I don’t know.
This was wholly a north American focused leadership conference that offered many opportunities to unpack and analyse today’s trends (such as, ‘The Surge’ continues: JFNA survey finds a third of Jews more engaged now than pre-Oct. 7 – eJewishPhilanthropy); communities in crisis; onboarding volunteer and professional leaders; gamifying leadership toolkits; engaging in the what/how/why of developing people and driving organisations.
The gathering was swarming with foundations and funders with intent to support beneficiaries. Innovation, startups and fresh thinking are embraced, intending to reach wider, diversified, and inter-generational target markets, to breathe vibrancy into thriving communities. I stole with my eyes, ears, hands, heart and my questions. Starved of face2face, delegates came out to celebrate this in-person gathering.
Our beloved resourced and well-structured Cape Town Jewish community can certainly teach and definitely learn in the area of best practice. Highlight phrases gifted to me to you: “Hold values tight and thoughts loose”. “Young people are both consumers and creators”. “We are wired to react, to serve, and to build.” ●
