Capetonian Jordy Sank, a filmmaker featured previously in the Cape Jewish Chronicle (Genetic conditions under the spotlight and Sanktuary Films sweeps up awards at Silwerskerm festival for Leemtes en Leegheid (aka A Void)), is enjoying significant success with his latest feature film, Die Kwiksilwers, a delightful Afrikaans-language film. The film has already won several awards, including the Audience Favourite prize at the 2024 Silwerskerm Festival, and was also screened at the 2025 Joburg Film Festival.
The movie has officially broken the record for the most successful local box office performance for an Afrikaans film since the COVID-19 pandemic. Produced by Jordy’s film company, Sanktuary Films, and directed by Jordy, the story centres around four elderly friends who embark on an unlikely adventure to witness a meteor shower in Sutherland. The film is a celebration of friendship, freedom, and the zest for life that cannot be extinguished by age.
Elsabé Marais, a widow in her 80s, decides to go on a road trip through the Karoo with her three best friends, Anna, Katie, and Mienkie. With her late husband’s car and no valid driver’s licence, they set off on a journey filled with laughter, memories, and self-discovery. Meanwhile, her overprotective son tries to stop them, leading to a series of comedic and touching moments.
Screenings at several local cinemas have been extended from 6 June 2025. Catch it at Ster-Kinekor Somerset Mall or Tygervalley. (The film has English subtitles.)
