Wolf Kibel Lippy Lipshitz, Palm Studios

Listen to curator Jay Van den Bergh:

The SA Jewish Museum is exceptionally proud to present our premier summer exhibition. Wolf Kibel Lippy Lipshitz, Palm Studios is a major retrospective thatbrings togetherthe work of two seminal South African Jewish artists.

During the 1930s Wolf Kibel (1903–1938) and Israel Isaac (Lippy) Lipshitz (1903–1980) shared an artist’s studio in Roeland Street. In this space, which they named Palm Studios, the two worked side by side, influenced by friendship and a shared vision. This period of collaboration resulted in an astonishingly rich creative output that helped shape the course of South African art.

It has been decades since either artist has been comprehensively exhibited. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and donors, the museum has been able to assemble a collection of major works from both masters.

The exhibition consists of paintings, sculptures, monotypes, woodcuts, sketches and etchings, secured from major art institutions and private collections both locally and abroad. This is a rare opportunity for lovers of South African art to engage with iconic South African masterpieces, including works never shown in public until now.

It is not to be missed. ●

The exhibition opens to the public on Friday 12 December and will be on display until the end of April 2026.
