Strength in action and purpose

At just 15, Mia Braun is already making her mark – combining determination, compassion and leadership in equal measure.

One of only 50 teenagers selected for the Cape Town Junior City Council (JCC), Mia stood out among hundreds of applicants – in fact, over 900 . “As soon as I heard about the opportunity, I knew I had to step up,” she says. For her, the role offers more than recognition – it’s a chance to grow as a leader while making a meaningful contribution. “I want to develop skills like public speaking, teamwork and problem-solving, and use them to help create a better future for the youth of South Africa.”

A Grade 10 learner at Herzlia High School, Mia’s commitment to service is already well established. She volunteers at the Tikvah Food Bank and spends her free time preparing food for homeless people.

Her journey to the JCC was both demanding and eye-opening. As part of her application, Mia visited Alpine Primary School in Mitchells Plain, where she encountered the stark realities faced by many children. “I became very aware of the difference between their lives and mine,” she reflects. “It made me realise how important it is to take action.”

Following multiple rounds of rigorous assessments and a final interview, Mia was selected for her passion, empathy and leadership potential – qualities she already demonstrates in abundance.

Beyond her community work, Mia is also a dedicated athlete. She is training for a Robben Island swim crossing in May, and has been selected for the South African water polo team heading to the Maccabi Games in July.

Grounded, driven and socially conscious, Mia Braun represents a new generation of young leaders – ready not only to succeed, but to make a difference.

More about the JCC

Under the theme for 2026, ‘Rolling Up Your Sleeves and Serve’, the JCC encourages young Capetonians to take action, get involved, and become part of a generation of civic-minded leaders who drive positive change in their communities.

The JCC is a non-political, City-run initiative that provides learners with first-hand experience in governance, budgeting, communication, and community impact. Through workshops, debates, and community leadership projects, Junior Councillors develop the skills and values needed to serve their city with integrity and purpose.
