Herzlia Discover experience

Herzlia’s Discover experience is a life-changing experiential programme that is run by Herzlia JET (Jewish Experiential Team) for the Grade 11s. This year’s 5-day retreat theme, ‘Beyond the known’, speaks to all the elements in our lives that are ‘unknown’ to us even though we live in an age of unprecedented information overload. Part of thriving in life is the ability to embrace and be comfortable with confronting the unknown.

The aim of Discover is to break the norms of our daily routines and create an opportunity to explore our inner worlds, from a perspective of Jewish religious exploration, and as it relates to personal growth. Jewish values and identity, religious rituals and self-care are explored. The serene location supported reflection and exploration on topics such as Jewish values, identity, religious rituals, and self-care, with the guidance of young adult advisors. Many participants found it transformative, gaining new insights into themselves and their faith. Memorable moments included heartfelt talks, music sessions, unique sound healing journeys, and enriching Shabbat experiences.

Here is what our Grade 11s had to say…

‘It was the best camp I have ever been to. I learnt so much about myself and about Judaism.’

’I kept Shabbat for the first time in my life, and I absolutely loved it. I really want to try to keep more of Shabbat back in Cape Town.’

‘I did not know what to expect from Discover, but I was blown away by the attention to detail and the organisation of the programme!’

’When I got home, I had the most real conversation with my dad that I have ever had and we both were in tears – it was so beautiful!’

Discover

By Noah Zive, Gr 11, Herzlia High School

Discover was an amazing experience, from the fun-filled ruach sessions to the powerful talks that impacted every one of us and had us thinking about who we are as Jews. Discover really had it all. As a grade, Discover brought us much closer together. It was amazing to see the unity we had during this trip from a Judaic point of view like keeping Shabbat, boys putting on tefillin, and even spending time discussing and learning together. Discover was genuinely one of the most meaningful and inspirational experiences imaginable. I think I speak for most of us when I say that I have taken a lot out of Discover: memories, insights and so much more.
