At this year’s Herzlia High School Valedictory UHS Chairman Brian Goldberg announced the creation by the committee of an annual Chairman’s Award for “an individual member of the greater Herzlia family, who has made an extraordinary contribution to the day-to-day experience of Herzlians”.
The recipient would be one who had enhanced the name of the school in one or more area and “through his or her particular interest or area of expertise, made an impact on the lives of pupils of Herzlia, while also enhancing the good name and standing of the school in the eyes of the greater Cape Town and South African community.
“The first recipient has for many years quietly, and in the most unassuming way, made a massive impact on the school, the pupils, and their families. Dedicated and passionate about what he does, he has skilfully empowered the pupils with this same passion. He has elevated his culture into the hearts and minds of all, and has placed our school on a cultural path, from which we must ensure there is no way back. His commitment to and love of Herzlia is uppermost in his mind, and he has thereby endeared himself to pupils, parents and teachers alike. Insofar as he is an alumnus of our school, we are especially proud.
“Having crafted a confidence in our children, through devotion and dedication to each child individually, he has empowered them with self-esteem and belief in themselves, their talent and ability. He has brought the sound of music to our campuses and to our hearts, brought smiles to our faces and tears to our eyes.
“I am delighted to honour our role model, and first recipient of the Award — our piano man, Ivor Joffe.”
