A new library for Herzlia

Herzlia
The Meyerowitz Family: Neil Meyerowitz, Lindsay Meyerowitz, Vivian Meyerowitz and Sandra Kaplan.

The Dave and Chavie Meyerowitz Library at Herzlia Highlands Primary was opened in style on Sunday 21 August 2016. In February this year a group of determined PTA moms decided it was time to give the Herzlia Highlands Primary library a much-needed makeover. The library, which was already looking tired, suffered a flood during 2015 and many precious picture books were damaged. They raised the necessary funds to start the journey ‘From drad to fab’, contracted the skills necessary to transform their dreams into a reality, and managed every step of the project. Caryn Gootkin, Lauren Cohn, Shirley Musikanth-Zacks, Leigh Kretzmar and Gail Kantor steered the project, spending months cataloging, classifying and discarding damaged or out of date or mouldy books and then buying books to fill the gaps. The school became their home away from home for the six months it took them to complete this project.

The keynote address at the opening was by author Paige Nick who had us all in stitches with tales of her outings to the Camps Bay library as a child. Geoff Cohen affixed the beautiful mezuzah that Debbie and Steve Arelisky, our PTA chair and treasure respective, brought from Israel as a gift to the school. Sharon Geffen, our Highlands Primary librarian, addressed everyone and thanked the PTA for the magnificent new library. In her words “All I want as a children’s librarian is to ignite the reading spark that has coloured my whole life and that has given me joy beyond any wealth.”

Our new library was made a reality through the generosity of a multitude of donors and the Meyerowitz/Kaplan family. Neil Meyerowitz spoke from the heart when dedicating the library to his late grandparents, Dave and Chavie Meyerowitz/Kaplan family. The library project is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through teamwork. Mike Ford, principle of Herzlia Highlands Primary, extended his heartfelt thanks to the entire PTA and their work crew. They left a legacy to Herlzia Highlands Primary that will be enjoyed by pupils for decades to come.
