Limmud gears up for a fantastic 2017

2016 began with bringing fresh faces, fresh voices — and their fresh ideas — onto the team. The chairs of 2016, which included Nancy Krisch, strove to pull together an organising team comprised of many new, impassioned and diverse volunteers, which brought a dynamic approach to the planning process. Even while celebrating 10 incredible years of Limmud in South Africa, Limmud Cape Town instituted a series of ‘firsts’ at conference: – A Shabbat Focused Mini-track, designed to give delegates the option of participating in an enhanced Shabbat experience vis-a-vis pre-identified text- based sessions; a communal Shabbat lunch option; and a dynamic Seudah Shlishit panel on Halacha, featuring rabbis from Progressive, Conservative and Orthodox movements. All of this, in addition to the usual Shabbat conference offerings. – A Young and Edgy Track, which pre-identified young adult presenters speaking on cutting-edge topics relevant to being young, Jewish and in South Africa. Collaborative Limmud Bites took place in the run-up to conference: – In partnership with Moishe House Cape Town, we held a very well-attended panel discussion on the community response to the ‘Kol Isha’ issue, that included voices from all parts of the community; – On Mandela Day, A captivated audience we partnered with Mensch and Moishe House to hold an incredibly edgy panel discussion on our responsibility to social justice as Jews, and then volunteered at a soup kitchen. Conference stats for 2016 proved once again that Cape Town Jewry love Limmud. We were at venue capacity with around 500 delegates in attendance. The programme boasted 117 diverse sessions delivered by 20 international and 68 local presenters. We are evaluating whether an ample facility exists so the wonderful concept that is Limmud Cape Town can be expanded to meet the demand to serve more people within the Cape Town Jewish community. Entering our 11th year in South Africa, Limmud SA is more relevant than ever, and remains agile and ready to create more unique Jewish pathways for anyone looking to go one step further in their personal Jewish journey.
