Putting the ‘mitzvah’ in Bar Mitzvah

He decided to have it in South Africa so he would be able to celebrate with his grandmother, Barbara Sher and family who live in Cape Town and would not otherwise have been able to make the journey to Los Angeles. Early last year, Jesse’s one- year-old cousin, Dean Sher, then two months old and Jodi Schaffer, 29 years-old, were both diagnosed with serious illnesses and had surgeries. Both children were treated at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Jodi has special needs and although she is 29 — and would typically not be treated at a children’s hospital — her body is that of a pediatric patient, so the incredible team at RCCH have helped her immensely. When deciding how to try and change the lives of other children, Jesse thought about bringing pyjamas to sick kids. He has dedicated this project to Jodi and Dean. Jesse hopes the pyjamas will make their stay a little more comfortable and cozy. He created a project called Jesse with Dean and Jodi ‘Jesse’s Jammies’ where he collected over 300 pairs of pyjamas from friends and family in both Cape Town and Los Angeles. Jesse donated these pyjamas to Red Cross Children’s Hospital on 15 December, 2016. It is important to Jesse that he continues to make a difference in the greater world. Just like his sister Maya did a few years back in Langa with school supplies, he knows that even the littlest thing can make a huge difference.
