Telfed has negotiated significantly reduced tuition fees for South African students at partner universities.
Telfed’s SASI programme (South Africans Studying in Israel) is in its 4th year, with 32 South African students currently studying at Israeli universities. Thanks to the generosity of The Eric and Sheila Samson Foundation, the Krawitz Family and other donors, South African SASI students with a demonstrated financial need can apply for a housing grant. This is just one of multiple layers of support that makes education in Israel more affordable and accessible to SA students.
Extending beyond the lecture halls, SASI students participate in a social programme that provides a deeper understanding of Israel. Since the academic year began in October, our 2019-20 SASI students have taken in the sights and sounds of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem with a thrilling Segway tour through Jaffa and a magical shabbaton in the Old City of Jerusalem.
SASI student, Ariella Lazarus, shared her experiences with us: “Through the SASI social programme we had the opportunity to go on a Segway tour through Jaffa. As we rode through the beautiful, historical streets we were able to enjoy an original experience while meeting new people and catching up with old friends from South Africa. We also had a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a Shabbat in the Old City of Jerusalem. We toured the Mahane Yehuda Market on Friday afternoon and met inspiring residents of the Old City, followed by a Friday night service at the Western Wall standing among Jews from around the world. Our Shabbat was not only filled with the spiritual upliftment that comes from being in the holiest city but it was also filled with incredible memories with our new and old friends that we met through this special programme. I truly recommend SASI for any South African that wants to study, experience and live in Israel but still keep their South African heritage close to their heart.”
